Case Study: Bringing the Airtel Delhi Half Marathon Route to Life with 3D Visualization

Project Overview

Large-scale sporting events require more than logistics—they require clear communication. For the Airtel Delhi Half Marathon 2017, Dream Engine Animation Studio developed a 3D route visualization that allowed participants to experience the course before race day.

Rather than relying on static route maps, the animation transformed the marathon course into an engaging aerial journey, helping runners understand the route, elevation changes, key turns, and landmarks they would encounter along the way.

The Challenge

A traditional marathon route map communicates distance but offers limited insight into the actual running experience. Participants often want answers to practical questions:

• Where are the major turns?

• Which sections involve elevation changes?

• What landmarks will I pass?

• What can I expect on race morning?

The challenge was to present all this information in an intuitive, visually engaging format without overwhelming viewers.

Our Solution

Dream Engine Animation Studio created a cinematic 3D route animation beginning at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium and following the entire race course from a bird’s-eye perspective.

The animation incorporated:

• A fully animated race route highlighted with a glowing yellow path

• A Jet Airways aircraft accompanying the course as a tribute to the event’s official travel partner

• Simplified 3D city models generated from open-source mapping data

• Colour-highlighted monuments for quick recognition

• Floating 3D labels identifying major landmarks

• A real-time elevation profile displayed in a heads-up display (HUD)

• Estimated weather information, humidity, and race start timing to help participants prepare

By combining mapping data with animation, the project transformed a standard route map into an immersive visual guide.

The animation helped:

• Communicate elevation changes and important turns

• Highlight Delhi’s iconic landmarks

• Improve participant confidence and preparedness
