3D modeling software can be a game changer for your model work.
3D models are used in animation, game design, architecture, manufacturing, and product design, and they are essential in all types of production – digital and physical. Designing these 3D models may appear even more magical than traditional art forms, but with a little skill and the help of strong 3D modelling software, it’s actually pretty simple.
However, there are a lot of options to choose from when it comes to 3D modelling software, each having its own set of strengths and drawbacks that make it better for some modelling assignments than others. Given the variances, selecting the appropriate software for your needs is critical for realising components of your ideas while avoiding wasting time with the incorrect technology.
To assist you in making your decision, we’ve researched the field and compiled a list of the most popular and well-supported 3D modelling applications. Some of these may not be the most intuitive to learn if you’re a novice, but they’ll pay off handsomely in terms of industry relevance, transferable abilities, and the warm fuzzy feeling of personal pleasure you’ll get when you carry off your great 3D ideas. If you’re already familiar with 3D modelling and are looking for a new application, we’ve compiled a list of characteristics that we think stand out on each.
It’s important to note that we’re just looking at 3D modelling software in its purest form. We’ve skipped over CAD software that’s better suited to drafting and engineering in favour of software that’s more commonly used by artists. There will inevitably be some overlap, but if you’re looking for precision design for real-world products, check out our guide to the best CAD software.
Blender, the Swiss Army Knife of 3D modeling software, is a lot of things to a lot of people. It’s a fantastic free 3D design platform with a bewildering array of modelling tools, though it’s completely free. There is no better investment than 3D modelling.
Blender is open-source software, which means that its users contribute to its development and expand its usability and feature set.
ACCESSIBILITY
Blender was once known for its bewildering menu options and steep learning curve, but that is no longer the case. The program’s impressively powerful tools, such as the new node-based procedural workflow which brings supreme flexibility to your work, are far easier for new arrivals and adopters to hit their stride and start using thanks to a much cleaner UI and massive tutilage from the project and community alike.
Are you looking for a place to begin? You can go straight to Andrew Price’s (AKA Blender Guru) famous Blender donut instruction or other community Blender tutorials or try the few Blender Foundation tutorials. There are a lot of them.
FEATURES
Nodes of Geometry
Geometry nodes, one of Blender’s newest features, is stealing another selling factor away from more expensive applications. The program’s new procedural modelling methodology opens up new possibilities for creating designs within parameters and seeing them immediately materialised in a manipulable manner. Though rival professional software now offers more in the way of procedural modelling, geometry nodes appear to be getting a lot of love from the Blender Foundation with each update, and long-time users are ecstatic.
Eevee & Cycles
Blender’s renderers are Cycles as well as Eevee, with Eevee being the real-time engine and Cycles producing production-quality renderings. While Eevee employs rasterization to quickly provide an approximate rendering while working with your models, Blender really excels in Cycles. The open-source rendering engine is a physical renderer of professional grade, which means it uses ray tracing to provide correct light distribution, incorporating reflection. Any 3D modelling software needs a strong renderer, but the quality of Blender’s rendering engines plus their easily integrated throughout the design workflow at various stages has us impressed.
A Complete Creative Suite
It’s difficult to put into words exactly what makes Blender unique. Despite the fact that many of its functions are common in similar software, Blender has one of the most comprehensive sets of features and processes available in a single programme – and it’s free. It’s a remarkable achievement given that other commercial applications have been hesitant to adapt new features and workflows.
Blender has you covered with at least the essential capabilities to support mesh modelling, animation and rigging, sculpture, scripting, producing visual effects, editing video, rendering, and more.
SCALABILITY & PRICING
Typically, scalability is determined by the cost and usefulness of a program at various stages of a digital artist’s career: studying, selling off-the-shelf models, building a small business, and so on. We can’t truly compare it to that standard because the entire Blender suite is available for free right now. Instead, we’ll look at how useful the product is for professional development.
Blender is a widely used program among amateurs, students, as well as professionals alike. Blender is frequently chosen by novices since it is fully free and has an exceptionally friendly community. It used to be intimidating for newbies, but the Blender Foundation has reduced its UI over time, making it far more approachable to newcomers.
Blender allows you to tackle 3D modelling in a variety of ways, including digital sculpting, mesh-based modelling, and parametric modelling, as well as a full array of tools for later stages in the production process. Blender may be used for animation, rendering, video editing, and visual effects, so you’ll only need one programme as your project grows in scope.
Blender is highly strong and the programme of choice for many professional animation studios, despite the fact that it is free and frequently used by beginners. Indeed, Blender’s widespread professional adoption is one of the reasons why Long-Term Support (LTS) versions are now available: so that significant projects can rely on the same software version to be supported throughout their development.
Blender is by far the most scalable 3D modelling application available, because to its low entry cost, supportive community, user-friendly interface, and professional acceptance and support.
Ideal for: Mesh modelling and animation Blender handles a lot of things well, but animation and mesh modelling are where it really shines. You can easily utilise this free and open-source tool in a competent animation studio, but other, more computer system on this list would certainly help many other applications more.
Pixologic’s core offering, ZBrush, is quite possibly the most complex digital sculpting modeler on our list. It’s the tool of choice for digital artists who like to work with “digital clay” rather than mesh or parametric modelling.
ZBrushCore and ZBrushCoreMini are lighter (and more inexpensive) versions of ZBrush, although ZBrush contains all of the best features.
ACCESSIBILITY
Because ZBrush is so focused on digital sculpting, it’s also incredibly easy to utilise for this purpose. Switching between brushes and your most common tools will become second nature if you’re accustomed with the workflow. ZBrush, on the other hand, has a lot of other features for such a concentrated application, which can be confusing to newbies at first. ZBrush can be difficult for newbies, whether they’re having trouble finding critical features hidden in expanded menus or are simply puzzled by the amount of possibilities for instruments as simple as a single brush. Fortunately, this sculpting tool has a vibrant community and a vast library of lessons for users of all skill levels.
If you’re just starting up, Pixologic’s ZClassroom offers free tutorials to help you get acquainted with the interface and point you in the correct path.
Features
Brushes in a Vast Variety
The amazing assortment of “brushes” (virtual sculpting tools) that ZBrush offers for modifying solid bodies is undoubtedly its most well-known feature. These are the tools that allow artists to quickly create digital clay without having to carve out all the tiniest details as they would with real clay.
In the default software, there are well over 300 configurable brushes. If that isn’t enough, you can create your own or use third-party brushes through markets such as ZBrushGuides.
Countless Polygons
Depending on your hardware, ZBrush can manage up to 100 million polygons each mesh before running into problems while modelling. The software is set up using Pixologic’s unique software, which uses “Pixols” – a “smart pixel” – to get over the typical limitations of 3D voxels (as Pixologic describes it). Pixols are simply 2D pixels with additional depth information attached, resulting in a “2.5D” image. The Pixols become familiar voxels after rendering.
DynaMesh Dynamic Base Meshes
ZBrush’s DynaMesh feature allows you to stretch, reconstruct, or otherwise add to your basic mesh while detailing a digital model. This function allows you to alter your base model without deforming its polygons by automatically refreshing the model topology.
This feature won’t likely replace subdivision in the later phases of your design, but it will streamline your workflow in the beginning, saving you time and hassle.
ZBrush is the best digital sculpting software for professionals, but it is also the most expensive. Fortunately, people who are unsure whether a large investment is worthwhile can start small and try the free ZBrushCoreMini or the inexpensive ZBrushCore first. These feature-light and generally limited versions of the application will get you started sculpting with a smaller number of tools and capabilities, but will still give you an idea of what Pixologic’s software is capable of. The following are the various licences and limits given by Pixologic:
Zbrush Paid plan 1
There are no constraints to the toolset. You gain access to the software’s extensive brush library and the option to develop or import your own, the programme can handle up to 100 million polygons (if your hardware can take it), and you have access to all of ZBrush’s capabilities, including DynaMesh.
ZbrushCore Paid plan 2
In every way, ZBrushCore is much less powerful than the entire ZBrush package. Users are limited to 20 million polygons per mesh but only 40 brushes, while they can still build custom brushes and import ZBrushCore brushes (not for ZBrush). Although DynaMesh is still accessible in ZBrushCore, sophisticated rendering tools such as raytracing aren’t. Although ZBrushCore is geared for hobbyists, it can still be utilised for business reasons. To see what else this version lacks, go at Pixologic’s ZBrushCore comparison document.
ZbrushCore mini Free
There is still an option for you if you only want to dabble your toes into the universe of ZBrush prior to actually spending any money. Pixologic is giving out the incredibly limited ZBrushCoreMini for free – but it is quite limited. Users are limited to 750 thousand polygons every mesh, 12 brushes, as well as DynaMesh is not allowed. Virtual Displacement Meshes (VDMs) – a shortcut to brushing intricate 3D features onto models — are still available, which may be useful for people just getting started. Most importantly, ZBrushCoreMini is intended for personal usage only. To see what else is lacking, check out the entire ZBrushCoreMini comparison.
Ideal for:
Sculpting with a computer. Though ZBrush has a full modelling and animation package, it is sculpting that the software excels at and where its most prominent capabilities are concentrated.
Cinema 4D, Maxon’s animation powerhouse featuring advanced simulation capabilities, is frequently used to create the most fascinating visual effects. In fact, Cinema 4D’s capabilities are so impressive that it’s employed in Hollywood blockbusters with a lot of VFX. Two examples of photorealistic fantasy created using Cinema 4D are Pacific Rim as well as Tron: Legacy.
ACCESSIBILITY
Despite being one of the more complex tools available, Cinema 4D does have a repute for being simple to use. Modeling as well as animation workflows are simplified thanks to the well-organized UI and extensive functionality, according to experienced users. This is beneficial to both newbies and experienced 3D artists, as the intuitive layout places the most important tools in front of you to help you familiarise yourself with what you’ll require most and to accelerate the process for all those who know what it is they’re looking for.
Cinema 4D already has a strong community that provides a wealth of lessons and assistance to budding artists. If you need a refresher, Maxon’s instructional offering in Cineversity – a series of video lessons — is a good place to start. Regular webinars with both the company’s training group, on the other hand, provide some more variation than old video lectures.
Features
Photogrammetry is in motion.
It might be difficult to create vast, intricate scenes from scratch. Since there are so many individual small things to produce in order to fill vast, realistic settings, the work necessitates the use of large teams, which was before assets, or capture technology. Normally, this would necessitate the use of a separate tool, but Cinema 4D has its own photogrammetry software, dubbed “Moves,” to do this. Users can quickly capture real-world things with Moves and scan and integrate them into the app. Do you need to populate a scene with commonplace items? Use what you already have at your home or business, or go to the store. You’ll have all you required to fill your virtual room in no time.
Advanced Modeling and Simulation
Simulation is undoubtedly Cinema 4D’s most well-known function. Simulation is becoming increasingly important as models become more sophisticated. After all, hand-modeling every strand of hair or even hand-placing every scattered object in a scene would take a significant amount of time, and these detailed details can easily throw the entire model off if they appear wrong. Cinema 4D not only boasts some of the greatest solutions for creating simulations like particle effects, but it also includes useful capabilities like Dynamic Placement, which allows you to apply physics just on fly when you place items in a scenario so they fall into the a natural, plausible position.
Reduction of Procedural Polygons
Meeting design limits can be difficult, and creating a more or less model with a low resolution can be more time consuming than developing the thing in considerable detail. The polygon reduction tool in Cinema 4D allows you to develop models in any resolution you want and then use the generative tool to reduce the polygons to fit your limitations later. However, it’s useful for more than just designing in your desired resolution. Simple polygon reduction allows you to reuse previous designs as original backdrop elements without bogging down the workflow with unnecessary polygons.
A programme with the complex physics and powerful supporting features required for widespread use in Hollywood is sure to be pricey, and Cinema 4D certainly is, at $95 monthly or $720 annually. It is, nevertheless, significantly less expensive than some of the other solutions on our list.
Maxon doesn’t appear to see the need to produce more accessible versions of Cinema 4D because it is such an established industry norm in its specialist areas. There are substantially discounted student subscriptions for non-commercial use, as well as a free trial to try out the software, but Cinema 4D is an easy proposition.
How does it grow in light of this? Using Cinema 4D for little projects is equivalent to maximizing smores with a fireball. Sure, it’ll work. It’s absolutely excessive, but… well… if it’s useful.
Cinema 4D is certainly the appropriate choice if you’re building vast scenes and require a versatile physics engine to make plausible models and arrange items quickly, or to produce beautiful Hollywood-level visual effects; however, if you’re just entering into 3D modelling, it’s a different story. Though Cinema 4D is simple to learn, you could be better suited with simpler software. Finally, Cinema 4D is a tool designed for professional use, so if you’re not going to use its advanced capabilities, it’s obviously isn’t worth it.
Ideal for:
Simulation as well as special effects are used in this project. Cinema 4D is excellent at animation as well as mesh modelling in general, but it was built for simulation with visual special effects, which is why some of Hollywood’s best companies utilise it for live-action VFX. This application is an excellent alternative unless you want that with a high degree of success behind component effects or if you want to construct your models with sophisticated simulated physics.
3ds Max, formerly known as Studio 3D, has a long history in 3D modelling, dating back to the early 1990s. It was acquired by Autodesk in the late 1990s and has since grown in popularity as many a visual effects and motion designer’s programme of choice for creating digital masterpieces.
Accessibility
3ds Max is probably the most challenging software on our list to learn. Because of its obtuse user interface, it may have the steepest learning curve for people who are new to 3D modeling.
Autodesk has some educational materials in its support sites to help new users get started, but it’s a small collection compared to other competing software’s educational libraries. Among the digital modeling software, 3ds Max is one of the most popular. Although there are still committed authors generating excellent educational content, it lacks the depth of much more common tools.
Though its approachability but instead community may be lacking in comparison to some of today’s most popular 3D modeling programs, 3ds Max’s long history on the market has led to a large number of wordpress themes and library resources that extend the software’s already extensive feature set — explaining you could find so many third-party means to make your time with that as well easier than with other software.
Features
Extrude Smartly
The clever extrusion technology makes working with and creating new features in 3ds Max incredibly intuitive. It allows users to extend faces in a variety of ways while maintaining the mesh in acceptable shape and automatically sewing intersecting faces. Cutting as well as stretching is along axes is basic, but splitting and extruded plastic along weird angles — and even gratis polygons — is equally simple. Smart extrude is similar to Blender’s extrude manifold tool, but it appears to perform much more smoothly and makes developing a design from one of the most basic base shapes much less intimidating.
Camera (Physical)
It’s useful to have camera controls that mimic those of a real camera if you’re making photorealistic renders. 3ds Max has a camera view that lets you modify brightness, depth of field, blurriness, Bokeh, and various aperture parameters, among other things. It’s a fantastic tool for individuals who are more at ease with a real camera than 3D modelling, as it allows them to use their existing talents to help their digital ideas in a unique way.
Execution of a Safe Scene Script
3ds Max, as an Autodesk product, provides some of the best security features available in 3D modelling software. One noteworthy feature is its secure scene script execution, which prevents scripts from attempting to execute instructions outside of the scene, such as accessing external folders on your PC. It’s a crucial functionality to have if you’re executing scripts from third-party sources; especially for larger teams. Fortunately, it’s also toggleable, so you can quickly disable it if you want to run an unusual script you’re sure isn’t malicious.
SCALABILITY & PRICING
3ds Max is the most costly software on the this list, as one could expect from Autodesk software. The cost of a permit is either $215 per month, $1,700 per year, or $4,845 per three years.
Small businesses as well as hobbyists, like other Autodesk applications, can get a heavily discounted licence to make the software itself and complete range of capabilities more accessible. For about $280 per year, recent grads, new businesses, including hobbyists can access 3ds Max Indie. It’s a terrific way to get your firm off the ground without having to worry about the software you’ll need, but it’s only available to organisations and individuals with yearly gross revenue from creative work of less than $100,000. You can use the discounted software for business gain and build your business if you meet the requirements for Autodesk’s 3ds Max Indie licence.
Despite the standard license’s extremely high price tag, the indie licence makes 3ds Max far more accessible than so many complex 3D modelling tools, making it a superb programme for pros just getting started. If you believe it might be right for you, take advantage of the free trial first.
Ideal for:
Modeling with meshes and procedurals. 3ds Max, more than any other tool on our list, is created with a modeling-specific focus so that it can be exported and used in other, more specialist, programmes at different stages of the production pipeline. Autodesk has the benefit of a large organisation and a software package that can address later stages of production separately.
